Opportunity for Early- or Mid-Career professional – Trustee of the Foundation for Science and Technology

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FST) is a UK charity, providing an impartial platform for debate of policy issues that have a science, research, technology or innovation element. It runs events and organises the Foundation Future Leaders programme, as well as publishing a Journal and providing guidance on governance issues to Professional and Learned Societies.

The FST is looking for an early- or mid-career professional, drawn from the civil or wider public service, industry or the research community, to serve on its Trustee Board. Our existing Trustee Board consists of senior leaders from across our core constituency (Parliament, Government, industry and the research community). We are looking to bring a different voice into our governing body, to inform how we shape our activities and events, and how we keep developing the Foundation Future Leaders scheme.

We are looking for people with ideas on all aspects of the Foundation’s work, and particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups in science, technology, research and innovation leadership. These include women, people from minority ethnic backgrounds, and people with disabilities. No experience of sitting on governing bodies is required – training will be provided.

Commitment: The minimum commitment is 3 x 1.5 hour meetings per year, held either in London or online. In addition, the Chief Executive calls upon all Trustees from time to time to help with specific areas of work, and this Trustee may be involved in the panel to recruit the annual cohort of Foundation Future Leaders. Trustees are also invited to all FST events.

Remuneration: This role is unpaid, although travel expenses can be claimed to attend Trustee Board meetings.

Term of service: Trustees normally serve for a term of 4 years, which can be renewed once. This position would begin in November 2022.

To apply: Please send a CV and a covering letter explaining why you would like to be a trustee to the Chief Executive, Gavin Costigan, on gavin.costigan@foundation.org.uk.

Deadline for applications: 30 September 2022

Interviews will be probably be held in the week beginning 31 October 2022, with a final decision taken at the Trustee Board meeting on 23 November.

If you would like an informal discussion about this position (without commitment), please contact Gavin Costigan (gavin.costigan@foundation.org.uk, and he would be delighted to meet you.
